PORT ISABEL, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A new school year calls for enhanced security protocols. Point Isabel ISD returned to school on Monday and is launching several protective measures.

The Point Isabel ISD superintendent, Teri Capistran, shared the district’s plan to ensure a safer environment for everyone. From upgraded surveillance systems to stricter campus entry protocols, all schools are taking a proactive approach to provide students’ and staff safety.

Capistran said over the summer, the district was working to complete perimeter fences at various buildings as well as the installation of ballistic film on the windows, which is designed to keep glass from shattering if someone shoots at the window.

In addition, they began building a new security guard booth that will stand between the junior high and high school. This development will cause traffic to be rerouted for some time.

Capistran adds that the district has also strengthened visitor protocols and is now requiring all visitors to present a valid government-issued identification in physical form to gain entry to any campus or district facility.

She says their goal is to have staff and students focused on curriculum rather than worrying about safety.

Some safety measures remain identical to previous years. The district has integrated AI software into school security cameras to detect weapons of any kind across campuses.

Students and staff are required to remove their belongings and walk through metal detectors before entering the school.

The statewide cell phone ban is also something the district has considered to guarantee communication is available during emergencies. Phones have been installed in every classroom to be used by both teachers and students if needed.

Capistran says that beyond physical safety, the district also recognizes the importance of mental and emotional well-being. Last year, they launched a new initiative called the “Dream Team”, made up of a licensed professional counselor, a social worker, and school officials who work together to ensure students have a healthy and safe home environment.
